Not a bad monitor
We have been using the monitor for 10months, so far so good. My only dislike is the LCD brightness at night is still very bright even once you have turned it down to the lowest setting it lights our whole bedroom up. I don't like to turn the screen off and only rely on sound as my girl is a tummy sleeper so I like to keep an eye on her. But I do like the button on the side that lets you turn music on and off.
Purchased in July 2018 at Baby Bunting Physical store for $250.00.

VTech BM 4500 Owl
We recently purchased the Vtech BM4500 Owl baby monitor from Baby Bunting. It fitted what we were looking and was on sale. The setup was very straight forward, the video and audio quality was ok, the cameras pan/tilt range was very good, however when we set up the camera in the bedroom and the parent unit in the kitchen the link would drop out. It’s about 10 metres in total distance. I couldn’t get more than a room away before the wireless link would drop out. I tried it on a few locations throughout the house but the wireless range did not improve. I logged a ticket with Vtech support via the online form on their website but no reply after two weeks. The lovely staff at Baby Bunting Aspley exchanged it without any grief for another brand.

Vtech may have fixed the previous issue
Its has temperature of the room, and it works well. Until you cant charge it and then it doesnt work. Happened at around 18 month for us, the charge port seemed faulty and wouldn't charge. Went to Baby bunting and would have walked out with replacement (warranty) if they had one in stock. Stock came in two days later and i picked it up. Looks like they have now changed the charge port of the parent unit to be the same as the one on the camera instead of using the USB port on the faulty unit.
Anyone who still has a usb style charger (android phone style charger) i would recommend buying a magnetic USB charge cable, that way you dont keep plugging in and out of the USB port which seems fragile over time. I have one on the way but dont need it since they changed the charge port.

Monitor playing music randomly while my baby is asleep
This is a good monitor for range , but it keeps playing music randomly especially when my baby is asleep and wakes her up and I can't get her back to sleep, there is a switch to turn it off when it's playing but no switch to turn it off all together, had to resort to cutting the wire to stop the music

Great monitor.. when it works.
I’ve had this monitor for 14 months now. Great range, great features, good picture quality. Has really helped me get some sleep in a long narrow house where I am far from my baby. BUT after 7 months the charging cable stopped connecting to the monitor. They were great with a replacement, but now, another 7 months later, the same thing f has happened! We were extra careful with it knowing it was a weak point but nope, broken again. They are selling a faulty product for top dollar to go into landfill. Very disappointed.

Useless, don't bother, may as well give your money away
I am on my FOURTH one of these, that's right - FOUR seperate systems, all with the same problems; battery fails, parent unit just turns off with no warning - it's not until you hear your child screaming after who knows how long that you realise, the temperature stops working. Vetch are fine with sending replacements if not at times a little rude, however after going through so many, I think it's a problem with the monitor and they should pull it off the shelves.

Long Range Cover But Intermittent Connection Even At Short Range
After over two years of using this product, I can finally provide a long term review of the parent unit and two cameras.
THE GOOD;
The coverage distance between the camera and parent unit is good as I can still receive video between the ends of my house and my house is pretty long.

IR mode is good for a camera of this size.
VTECH Customer Service is top notch from my experiences with them.
THE BAD;
One big issue is that connection is intermittent on a regular basis and the unit doesn't always capture sound in the room where my bubs are sleeping to turn on the screen.

Be careful of the USB connector on the parent unit as they are very fragile (Replaced once due to the broken USB port and another time due to loss of video and audio under warranty). This makes it the third monitor I have in 2 years.
Battery life is very short and wears out fairly quickly (Replaced battery twice already due to short lifespan) if you need to have the monitor constantly on, I put it in sleep mode when my bubs were older.
I'm not too fussed but if you want something with reliable video stream, this is not the unit to buy.

Was great while it lasted.
The monitor was fantastic while it lasted. We had it for 20 months and then al of a sudden the screen/monitor would start cutting out and/or freezing. we took it to get repaired (we could not find out receipt :(. So we paid to get it fixed privately) and the repair guy said it had to do with the power plug. Something to do with the prongs in the cord itself. They are incredibly delicate apparently, and by plugging the power cord into the monitor and then unplugging and repeating this frequently, the little “prongs” get bent and then it starts to malfunction. It’s almost impossible to fix because these “prongs” are so delicate and fine. We managed to get it fixed temporarily, but that only lasted about a month and it’s back to its same old tricks.
We’re SO disappointed in the quality of this product considering how much it cost.
If you do happen to buy this, or already have it, please don’t unplug the power cord from the monitor. Just act like it’s NOT a cordless device and keep the cord attached the entire time. This will at least minimise he chances of this happening to you.

Great baby monitor
Very happy with our purchase.
We previously had an oricom unit which we had nothing but problems with. We then purchased the Vtech and it has been great. No connection drop outs like the oricom. The only negative is the parent unit battery doesn't last too long. Other than that I can't fault it.

Doesn't Last Long!
I've had this camera for 6 months dropped in and out every now and then but still worked fine.. now it won't link at ALLLLL. It's so frustrating especially when you're trying to transition your crawler into sleeping in their room and the darn thing is pitch black and won't link. I've about had enough and feel like running it over in my car! Do not buy waste of money and time!!!
In addition, users are also able to send and receive multimedia files, including videos, images, and even voice notes. Samsung omnia i900 update. Since the app operates like an SMS exchange and uses phone numbers integrated from the user's address book, it requires neither pins nor usernames.

This is terrible! The worst!
The night vision stoppped working. It will suddenly work then flash black and then go back to night vision then go black and it does this all the way through. My baby has to sleep with a lamp on now. The charger stopped working and we had to buy a separate charger. Now it's not charging at all. This is absolutely useless.

Don't waste your money
This is a total waste of money. I purchased this as it was the most expensive in Big W be8ng $289 thinking the dearer the better right?. WRONG!! It constanlty disconnects after a mintue or 2 having to turn off owl and try to reconnect which still doesnt find the connection, if you fluke it after a million attempts it drops out again. I have had to remive it from my wifes hands as she feels like to throw the darn thing. Extremely frustrating and a complete waste of our money.Do yourself a favour and get a cheaper more fnctional one. Wish I had of researched before purchasing as it seems eveyone has had same issue.

Get Something Else - don't bother with this one
We had the BM4500 and also purchased an additional camera as we have 2 kids - I have now returned both the main unit & second camera, mainly due to the nightly connection issues. But there are LOTS of issues with the design of this unit:
CONS -
* Parent Unit Audio - the volume on the parent unit is not adjustable??!! This is the biggest flaw of this camera, so when there is an 'Low battery audible alert' or 'Out of range audible alert', or any other 'alert' or even when you press each key on the unit, it is SUPER LOUD! This is such a shame, especially in the middle of the night when you need it to be QUIET. So overtime you want to see your baby, and press the camera screen on key it wakes your husband up also. Or when the camera drops out of range, the Alert noise is sooo loud (and yes this happens nearly every night!
* Parent Unit Display Brightness - the parent unit screen brightness is NOT adjustable. During the day this is ok, but at night it is very very bright and when the screen gets turned on by the baby's noise or if you press any key, the brightness is too bright. The Oricom 710 was adjustable up & down which was great during the night when you need the screen to be on the lowest brightness. We ended up having the screen facedown on the bedside table just to keep the brightness down.
* Out of Range/Camera Disconnection - the camera's in both rooms randomly disconnect during the day & night, not in any consistent patterns or days. This becomes very frustrating as you need to re-set the connection on the baby camera, and hence having to go into the baby's room and sometimes waking the baby up in the process of re-connecting the camera to the parent unit.
* Display - the screen is super sensitive, we only dropped our monitor once and it was broken across the screen with numerous lines. The parent unit monitor still worked but it was frustrating that it was broken as soon as it was dropped. As new parents are so sleep deprived & clumsy, you will end up dropping things all the time! The Oricom 710 was better, as it lasted over 2 years with numerous drops and no broken screen!
* Lullabies - we never used this function as we didn't think our baby needed this?
* Camera Sound Sensitivity - this camera could definitely be improved, the sensitivity of the sound in the baby's room was quite poor, and was much much better in both the Oricom's SC710 & SC850.

PROS -
* Range - better than Oricom's SC710 & SC850. This VTech had approx. 5m extra range/distance it could work with compared to the both the Oricoms. In our old house which was small, the Oricom 710 was sufficient and never out of range (we loved the Oricom SC710 for 2 years in the small house, until we moved). Once we moved into our current medium/large house, the Oricom was range only made it half way into our kitchen, not working in our study, lounge or guest bedrooms & garage, which made it very useless in motioning the kids in the evenings and during the day. So we tried this VTech BM4500, which had a little longer range (although not by much).
* Camera - can be moved via pan/tilt using the parent unit which is great for any minor adjustments (although our old Oricom SC710 did not have this function, we didn't really miss it either - once you set the camera up, it doesn't really need any adjusting anyways);
* Temperature sensors - this is great, as you know what to dress the baby in & whether to add any additional blankets during the day & night sleeps;
* 2 Cameras - we liked that we were able to connect 2 cameras to one parent unit, and the scanning option on the unit worked well.

Overall, we returned the VTech 4500 and additional camera as there were too many issues for us to be able to get good night sleep without the camera waking us up - the last straw was drawn when the camera kept me up all night..not the baby. We loved the Oricom 710, but only in a small house due to the poor range in a medium/larger house when we moved. We are now searching for an appropriate solution.
Questions & Answers
Can you put can additonal vtech camera to an existing 4500 owl monitor? Ive already got the owl monitor and looking at getting a second one as I'm putting my twins into seperate rooms.
Yes, you can. I believe the camera is approx $120 on its own.
